Although a world renowned brand today, Din Tai Fung had an extremely humble beginning. It started out as a whole sale oil shop when the founder Bingyi Tang was unemployed after his workplace went out of business. However, even this business did not last long, thanks to the availability of tinned oil. It was all in good fortune, of course, because Bingyi and his wife decided to sell steamed dumplings instead. The unique taste and flavor of this dumpling attracted many customers and Din Tai Fung was converted into a restaurant. The rest, as they say, is history!
