Joo Chiat Restaurants


Joo Chiat in Singapore is a district that covers the areas of Joo Chiat Road, Joo chiat Place, Tembeling Road, Onan Road, East Coast Road and other areas in the Katong Area. This district is traditionally known as the Peranakan or Nonya which means Straits-born Chinese enclave. And has old 2 storey shop houses with major eateries. The Singapore Heritage Restaurant at the China Heritage Centre in Pagoda Street, Joo Chiat is a wonderful place that has innumerable local and authentic dishes. Rice and noodle being the major items in the menu is accompanied by a crispy vegetarian spring roll which is a good starter. The satay fried rice with chicken on skewers is a delight. The other dishes like the black pepper beef noodles is an authentic local dish that has many lovers craving for more.

Here the cuisine is a unique and beautiful blend of Chinese and Malay cooking style that has evolved from the colonial era. Hence the food uses more belachan than ketchup. The Kueh Pai-Ti are crispy, hand made flour basket that is filled with shredded turnips and vegetables. The cabbage roll is another signature appetizer of Chilli Padi. The Kepetin Bak Wan, a big pot of soup with plump crabmeat balls, tofu and minced fatty pork is one of the most popular dishes. Stonegrill in Katong area of the East Coast Road is a very popular place where food is served on hot slabs of volcanic granite. The food is stone grilled in front of your eyes and this makes it a fascinating experience. There are some authentic mushroom flavors like the Portobello mushrooms. Steak item like tender beef and the sea food combo is equally mouth watering. The red wine poached pear and brownie with ice cream are excellent desserts.

True Blue Cuisine on the Esat Coast Road serves authentic Nonya food. Begin with the flavoured hote tea and then go on to the Ngoh Hiang which is a chicken item with sweet chili sauce. Canton Wok on Joo Chiat Road and minutes from Siglap serves good Cantonese specialties. The baked crab with white cream sauce is an award winning recipe invented by the chef. The deep fried egg plant is a good combination of vegetarian and meat. Another note worthy preparation is the Yuan Yang Pork Ribs that exhibits good flavors. End with the tie guan yin tea that is truly refreshing.
