| Teacher training of all kind in Singapore is controlled by the National Institute of Education (NIE). There are special need programmes at initial teacher training level and at postgraduate level offered by the NIE.
The candidates need to undergo training at the NIE, there are 3 pre-service teacher training programs conducted by the NIE which are :-
Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Programme
This programme targets to train university graduates into becoming primary, secondary or junior school teachers. It’s a one year program excluding those who’re specialising in two year physical-education PGDE.
This program prepares graduates for a stimulating and sustaining teaching career. It imparts beginner teachers with the necessary knowledge and skills required to be effectual members of the school community.

This one year training programme covers:
- Concepts and principles of education i.e. Education Studies
- Methods and techniques of teaching for assigned subjects i.e. Curriculum Studies
- Subject content for Primary School teaching i.e. Subject Knowledge
- Language enrichment and Academic Discourse Skills
- Practicum
The Sub Dean for PGDE supervises the academic advisement of student teachers within the programmes and the implementation of this program.
Entry Requirement: You need to have at least a Bachelor’s degree to enroll for this programme.
Diploma in Education Programme (DipEd)
NIE offers various initial teacher formulation programmes that provide diplomas to candidates for teaching in primary and secondary schools. There are two versions of diplomas in Educations:
The general track trains students into becoming generalist primary school teachers and
the specialisation track offers specialisation in teaching of the mother tongue languages and Physical Education at the primary and secondary school level, and Music, Home Economics or Arts at the secondary level. These diplomas are the initial qualifications towards a satisfying teaching career and lets holders to pursue further professional and academic development later in their careers.
It’s a 2 year training program offering numerous Specializations which mainly cover methods and techniques of assigned subjects through curriculum studies, concepts and principles of education through education studies, practicum, subject content for primary school teaching through subject knowledge and academic discourse skills along with language enrichment.
There is also a Diploma in Special Education (DISE) offered by the NIE that prepares teachers to train children and young adults having disabilities including physical, intellectual, sensory, psychological and behavioural disabilities.
The Sub Dean for Diploma & Practicum and the Associate Dean for Programme Planning and Management oversee the implementation of these diploma programmes.
Entry requirement: You need to have 1 month relevant experience along with a GCE’A’ Level or polytechnic Diploma.

Bachelor of Arts (Education) /Science (Education)
This programme provides academic and specialized development for undergraduates for becoming effective teachers in schools. The positioning of the Undergraduate programmes is done to integrate the best of academic degree with an effective foundation in the field of education. This helps in producing graduates who have knowledge and the skills to excel in careers of education and education-related fields. There are three programmes offered under this scheme:
- BA[Ed]) i.e. Full time Bachelor of Arts (Education)
- (BSc[Ed]) i.e. Full time Bachelor of Science (Education)
- And (B Ed) i.e. Part time Bachelor of Education
This programme awards honours degree to student teachers who excel in their academic performance. A rounded University education is provided by these degree courses through rigorous coverage to 1 or 2 academic subjects and training in the skills required to teach in Primary or Secondary Schools.
BA and BSc education offer 7 areas of study which include academic subjects, curriculum studies, educational studies, curriculum content, practicum, essential modules and general electives.
Entry Requirements: You need have either a GCE 'A' Levels or a polytechnic diploma.
