The Nrityalaya Aesthetics Society was founded by K.P. Bhaskar in India in the late 1940s. It was previously known as Bhaskar's Academy of Dance. The dance training started in Singapore around 1952 and Mr. Bhaskar got the support oh his wife, Santha Bhaskar, who is also a well known classical dancer. Officially it is a registered non profit society and shows and courses on music and dance are conducted by the Society's branches in California, USA, Australia, Malaysia and Germany.

The activities of the Nrityalaya Aesthetics Society include classes, performances and lectures in Bharata Natyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak, Hindustan vocals, veena, violin, sitar, tabla and even on western classical music, Spanish, keyboards and pop guitar. It also helps out the students with the knowledge of Indian Art, yoga, meditation and stress management to uphold their artistic qualities." Aesthetics", the quarterly published magazine of the Society provides a platform for internal interaction of the students. Apart from this, the students get to know each other and work together for monthly seminars on Indian literature and also during the annual drama festival of the Society. The USP of the Nrityalaya Aesthetics Society lies in the nurturing of cross- cultural and experimental dance performances.

It is interesting to note that the Society operates on the basis of collaboration with various art schools and organizers like the Practice Performing Arts School, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, La Salle-SIA College of Art and many others to work on the projects like a fusion of Western choral traditions with Karnatic music or Trojan Women with Mahabharata. Being an active part of the National Arts Council's Arts in Education Programme for schools, the Nrityalaya Aesthetics Society is vested with the job of research and promotion of Singapore based Indian talent in the sphere of performing arts.
