Singapore Institute of Technology

Since Singapore gained independence from colonial rule in 1965 and became an independent, sovereign, socialist, and democratic republic, it has made rapid strides in every sphere of human life. Singapore is just a tiny island nation but its GDP (gross national product), GNP (gross national product), PCI (per capita income) is higher than most countries.

The academic scenario in Singapore

The Singapore Institute of Technology

There are many universities in Singapore that offer almost the entire spectrum of disciplines in higher education in the three broad streams of arts, science and commerce. One needs to successfully complete at least three years of pre-university studies after passing the GCE ‘O’ level examination to qualify for admission to one of the universities in Singapore for any undergraduate or bachelor’s degree course. International students wishing to pursue higher education in Singapore must have academic qualifications that are equivalent or tantamount in weightage to the certificates awarded by higher secondary schools. The National University of Singapore is the oldest of all the universities in Singapore. Other universities of repute are Nanyang University, Singapore Management University, SIM University and the Singapore Institute of Technology.

The Singapore Institute of Technology is an exclusive university in that it is the lone tertiary academic establishment in Singapore that is publicly funded. It was founded in December 2009 and has tie ups with several universities in Europe and USA for offering exchange programs for a wide gamut of disciplines under the broad categories of Medical Sciences, Engineering Sciences, Applied Medical and Engineering Sciences, Interactive Digital Mediums, Design Technology and Hospitality Sciences. It also has collaborations with 5 polytechnic colleges and institutions that are situated locally. The registered office of the university is located bang opposite the Parliament building.

Admission criteria in the SIT

SIT was established with the primary objective of providing polytechnic graduates with opportunities for university education with an industrial and commercial orientation. So all those wishing to pursue a course under the aegis of this particular institute of Technology must have completed a diploma course from any of the following local polytechnic institutions:-
  • Nanyang Polytechnic
  • Republic Polytechnic
  • Singapore Polytechnic
  • Ngee Ann Polytechnic
  • Temasek Polytechnic
Those in their final semester can apply with the declared results of their previous five semesters before admission for the different courses close. Those applying would also need to submit the result of their final semester as soon as they’re declared as proof that they’ve successfully completed their diploma. Past and present students of Nanyang Technology University, Singapore Management University and SIT can also apply for admission.

The university offers affiliate programs of New Castle University, University of Glasgow, University of Manchester, Munchen Technical University, and University of Nevada, Las Vegas. This publicly funded technological university enjoys a high ranking compared to its counterparts in the rest of the world.
