Singapore is looking at building on its traditional strength as a petrochemicals hub. Singapore offers a cost-competitive and synergistic environment for some of the world's leading petroleum and petrochemicals and specialty chemicals giants, including ExxonMobil, Shell and Sumitomo Chemical. This is because it offers relevant infrastructure, technology, integrating
innovation, manufacturing, regional distribution, marketing and other competent services. Singapore is Asia's Oil Product Pricing Centre and is among the world's top 3 oil-refining centres and trading hub. |
|
Singapore is also among the top 5 bulk liquids ports in the world, Asia's hub for lubes additives, top in the world for marine coatings for ship repair and maintenance and home to 8 of the world's top 9 flavors and fragrances companies.
The chemical industry has been a major part of the Singapore economy. One of the top global chemical companies, Mitsui Chemicals Inc is soon going to set up its first overseas petrochemical R&D centre at Singapore's Institute of Chemical Engineering and Sciences (ICES). The ICES is responsible for setting up world leading laboratories, pilot facilities, and carries out world-class research programmes in chemistry and chemical engineering sciences in Singapore. To represent the chemical industry of Singapore in the private sector, the Singapore Chemical Industry Council (SCIC) was established. Among other things, the SCIC has been organizing the Responsible Care Best Practices Sharing Seminar to encourage the non-confidential sharing of good practices amongst industry members. |
