Logistics & Transport

The Port of Singapore Authority (PSA) is one of the world's busiest ports handling a phenomenal volume of container traffic daily. The PSA has several terminals, which regulate the movement of cargo containers meant for international export . Singapore is a major shipping hub and is host to several multinational shipping giants such as Pacific International Lines (PIL), Neptune Orient Lines (NOL), APL, NYK, Mitsui, P&O Nedlloyd and scores of other ocean liners.

The logistics industry has shifted from providing transportation and warehousing, to offering total integrated logistics solutions. Manufacturers now outsource their logistics requirements and receive value-added services from third-party providers. These providers offer one-stop integrated solutions. This means shorter time-to-market - a key competitive advantage in an age of shortening product life cycles.

The Government is also spearheading training initiatives at institutes, polytechnics and universities. One of which, the dual degree Master of Science in Logistics and Supply Chain Management, is a joint initiative between the National University of Singapore and the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Singapore's marine and offshore engineering industry, meanwhile, is known worldwide for its strengths in offshore exploration and production platforms. Local shipyards have captured more than 60 percent of the world market for the building of new jack-up rigs since 1996. Singapore's extensive connectivity through sea and air is its topmost attraction. Both the air and maritime port have been consistently rated the best in the world. Singapore is linked to more than 600 ports worldwide by over 200 shipping lines and is connected by air to 150 cities in 51 countries. These linkages make Singapore an ideal base for companies.

So if one has requisite documents and finance; effectively it takes just one day to acquire bureaucratic clearance for starting one's own business in Singapore. The island state is known for its transparency as far as bureaucracy is concerned and is highly respected for the same.
