Majestic Theatre in Chinatown

Built in 1927, Majestic Theatre in Chinatown is located along the stretch of Eu Tong Sen Street began its journey as a Cantonese opera house. This building was also designed by the famous architects Swan and Maclaren just like The Southern Hotel of Chinatown. Majestic Theatre was previously known as Tien Yien Moh Toi Theatre. After 1938, it was converted to a cinema house when the Shaw Brothers started renting the present Majestic Theatre in Chinatown for screening the latest Cantonese blockbuster films in the name of Queen's Theatre.

It was after the Second World War when it was renamed as the Majestic Theatre by the Majestic Film Company, the new tenant, with the end of Japanese occupation in Singapore in 1945.

The Majestic Theatre building in Chinatown was a manifestation of a fine blending of Western and Chinese architectural styles and that could be best understood in its decoration with tiled scenes from Cantonese opera and shiny colorful mosaics projecting flying dragons with heads and tails connected. It could accommodate 1,194 seats. During 1950s and 60s the Majestic Theatre in Chinatown became highly popular not only to the common people but also to film stars from Hong Kong like Grace Chang, Lin Dai and Ge Lan. In 1983, Cathay Organisation became the sole owner of Majestic Theatre and it continued the screening of Chinese films until 1998 when unfortunately it was closed down.
