Shophouses in Chinatown

The streets of Chinatown is crowded with old and as well as newly designed shophouses. Let us take a look at the Shophouses in Chinatown:
Tea Chapter:
It is basically a shophouse in Chinatown under the category of drink but also retails a wide variety of Chinese tea and is located at 9,Neil Road.

Bee Cheng Hiang :
This shophouse in Chinatown houses the most famous brand Bee Cheng Hiang with 28 outlets in Singapore and is located at 69- 71 Pagoda Street.
Fragnance: This Chinatown Shophouse retails for another famous brand bak kwa at 205 and 207 New Bridge Road and it is known for 20 outlets throughout Singapore.

Lim Chee Guan: This shophouse has only one outlet but this is famous for 3- 4 hour queues around the Chinese New Year period.
One will still find lots of old shophouses in Chinatown that are specialized in age old trades like clog making and calligraphy, paper effigies of cars and houses and one must pay a visit to tea houses to experience the traditional art of tea- brewing. In 1822 Singapore Town Planning Committee stated that houses should go for uniform type of front, a verandah open to all sides. This led to the "five-foot way" that the shophouses in Chinatown are famous for. Research shows that shophouse was a fusion of the narrow fronted houses of Amsterdam with the ones in South China especially in Guangzhou and Fujian.

A visit to the Chinatown Heritage Centre in Chinatown is a must and this museum actually houses several shophouses of the early days of Chinatown. The sight of a series of brightly painted colonial shophouses in Chinatown surely implies Singapore's concern and fascination for its architectural heritage.
