Besides these, there is another aspect of Singapore which is held in great esteem - the literature. Over the years, a number of world famous writers have brought out some famous books which have defined the literature of the country and exposed Singaporean sensibilities to the rest of the world. Below given are the books which have provided a very real glimpse of Singapore and have been loved in all parts of the world.

If We Dream Too Long

Written by the famous writer Goh Poh Seng, “If We Dream Too Long” was the first real novel written by a Singapore author. The book talks about various aspects of Singaporean life. The plot takes the reader through the life of Kwang Meng, an eighteen year old boy who dreams too long and in the end, remains a passive person.

The characterization and the way the story has been spun in a simple manner makes a profound effect on the reader and brings him close to Singaporean way of life, thereby making it a very interesting read. The novel won the Fiction Book Award given by the National Book Development Council of Singapore.

Abraham’s Promise

Abraham’s Promise is a book written by Philip Jayeretnam. The book, with Abraham Isaac as the main character, is based on his personal experiences in Singapore. Abraham, unfortunately, is always unlucky in life and meets with several failures. Yet, he maintains his self-respect and holds his head high. In the beginning, the book seems ordinary but as you read through the initial chapters, the story becomes extremely engrossing with characters coming out powerfully.

Fistful of Colors

Fistful of colors is a book which talks about the life of a girl in Singaporean multicultural society. The author, Christine Suchen Lim weaves a spell binding tale of Suwen, a girl who faces discrimination in various aspects of life. Her past and present are beautifully depicted in the book. Suwen’s experiences as she journeys through different colors of life, the adversities which she has to face, the life of her friends and how all of them cope with the fact that living in this place is their destiny are the focus of the book. Fistful of Colors won the inaugural Singapore Literature Prize.

Following the Wrong God Home

Tangerine is a very unique book because of the unique style in which it has been written. The author, Colin Cheong has written the entire book like a travel diary.

Tangerine

A special mixture combining shell lime, egg white, sugar, water and coconut husks was used. Later on, it was rubbed with rock crystals and powdered with fine soapstone. This construction is one of its kinds. The church played a major role in catering to the wounded and needy at the time of Japanese violence. When the hospitals and clinics were crammed with people and there was not enough space, this church provided shelter. The Cathedral’s nave was used for this purpose. Daily prayers and communion services took place without much obstacle even during the harsh times of the World War II.
