Founders of Singapore |
|
|
The three people who played a major role in the founding of Singapore are Sir Stamford Raffles, Lieutenant Major William Farquhar and Dr. John Crawford. They are also known to be the Founders of Singapore.
It was Raffles, who took the first step to set up a British settlement at the southern part of the Malacca Stratits as the realization dawned on him that there was a need for another trading port or trading center

The reasons for Raffles opting for Singapore are that it was the chief trade route for China and India and also featured a harbor that could accommodate a quite a number of ships at a particular time. He conceived the plans as well as the policies and with only two Scotsman to help him out with the financial and the administrative works he fulfilled his dream.

| Thus Raffles put a lot of blood and sweat into giving Singapore all that it lacked and it also owes a lot to Raffles for emerging as one of the flourishing nations of the world. It perhaps would have not been possible for Raffles to handle it all alone and therefore it is difficult to deny the role played by the Lieutenant Colonel Wiilliam Farquhar. Farquhar along with Raffles got the trading center started on the land of Singapore. Dr John Crawford may not be involved to a great extent as far as the founding of Singapore is concerned. After Raffles withdraw his control from the nation of Singapore in the sense that after he moved away from this land the control of Singapore passed onto the hands of Crawford. In the year 1824, in the month of March, Crawford was granted the authority to include Singapore in the list of the British possessions.
