Founding of Modern Singapore

Singapore, one of the most prosperous nations of the world is situated at the southern part of the Johor that is located in Malaysia and lies to the north of the Riau Islands of Indonesia. Lieutenant Colonel Wiiliam Farquhar and Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles play a major role as far as Founding of Modern Singapore is concerned. It was Raffles who felt the need for another trading center and therefore along with Lieutenant Colonel Wiiliam Farquhar started his search for a place that would suit their purpose.

They arrived at the St John's Island in the year 1819 on the 28th of January and landed on the land of Singapore on the 29th of January in the year 1819. Raffles on arriving here sought the permission of the Temenggong, who was then the chief of the island. Temenggong was not wiling to act in favor of Raffles and for this purpose Raffles then tried to convince the eldest heir of the old Sultan whose demise made the younger son the ruler as the elder son, Hussein was not there at that time. Raffles succeeded in his mission and established a tent at the Padang in the year 1819 on the 6th of February and showed his gratitude for Hussein for Hussein's support by making him the new Sultan of Johor.

For using the land of Singapore, Raffles had to pay a certain amount of money to the Sultan and also to Temenggong every year. The Founding of Modern Singapore was marked by the ceremony of flag raising. In the year 1826, Penang, Malay and Singapore were controlled by a central governor, who resided in Penang and eventually the affairs of the state were managed from Singapore itself
