Citizenship Singapore

There are four ways of getting citizenship in Singapore. Scroll down the page to learn more about citizenship in Singapore. The four ways of acquiring citizenship in Singapore are by birth, by descent, by registration or by naturalization. In the year 1957 Singaporean citizenship was granted for the first time when it was a self-governing colony under the United Kingdom. Our site focussingapore offers detailed information about citizenship in Singapore.

Citizenship by birth: A person is regarded as a citizen of Singapore if he or she is born in Singapore.

In this case at least one of the parents has to be a Singaporean citizen. If the mother of the child born in Singapore is a foreign diplomat and the father is a Singaporean then the child will be granted citizenship by birth but the rules vary with the reversed gender roles.
Citizenship by descent: A child born on or after 15th May 2004 outside the country border of Singapore with at least one parent a Singaporean citizen is considered to be a citizen of Singapore by descent.

The child born outside Singapore before 15th May 2004 is granted the Singaporean citizenship by descent only if the father of the child is a citizen of Singapore by birth. In all the cases the children of Singaporean citizens born overseas will only be granted citizenship by descent if they have not taken up the citizenship of their nation of birth.

Citizenship by registration: An individual can only apply for the citizenship by registration in Singapore only if he or she has been a permanent resident of the nation for at least two years and is employed or married to a citizen of Singapore.

Citizenship by naturalization: The government of Singapore no longer grants this type of citizenship. In Singapore there are no options for dual citizenship.
