Independence of Singapore

Singapore is the home to a number of tourist destinations, picturesque landscapes and is one of the most sought after tourist destinations. The Independence of Singapore is linked to a lot of events.

It is a Chinese account, where we find the first mention of Singapore and this account belongs to the 3rd century. Singapore earned some recognition during the 14th century when Parameswara ruled the Sri Vijayan empire.

It is Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles , to whom goes the credit of laying the foundation of the modern day Singapore, as it was Raffles who took the initiative to build a port in Singapore. At the time of the Second World War, Singapore got defeated at the hands of Japan and remained under the Japanese rule from 1942 to 1945. After the war got over Singapore once again came under the rule of the British.

There came a time when it was thought that Singapore would be unified with the Federation of Malay. However the conflict that sprang up between the Alliance Party of Malaysia and the People's Action Party resulted in the separation of Singapore from Malaysia. Singapore on 9th August in the year 1965 eventually emerged as an independent republic. After it gained Independence, Singapore had to face the most difficult times as the leaders were burdened with the task of establishing Singapore as one of the most glorious nations of the world.

Stated below are the dates that are relevant as far as the Independence of Singapore is concerned or it could be said these events laid the way for Singapore to regain its independence.

1948 - Singapore for the first time got a taste of the local elections.
1955 - David Marshall , the then Chief Ministerof Singapore took the first step regarding the establishment of the self - government of Singapore.
1959 - Lee Yew Hock succeeded David Marshall and succeeded in his mission of Singapore self-government.
1963 - Singapore was during this time an integral part of the Malaysia Federation.
