Hinduism in Singapore


Hinduism encompasses numerous religious rituals, varied sects and philosophies. It is the third most popular religion and has around 900 million followers around the world.

A handful of entrepreneurs arrived in Singapore with Sir Stamford Raffles, the settlement's colonial 'founder' in 1819. Among them was Narayana Pillay. Pillay was a successful businessman, and founder of the first Hindu temple.

Sri Mariamman Temple built in 1827. There are approximately 180,000 Hindus living in Singapore today. Non-Hindus can also visit the Hindu temples of Singapore.
