Nattukottai Chettiars, a money lending community from Southern India, built Sri Layan Sithi Vinayakar Temple in 1925. The Nattukottai Chettiars, also known as Nagarthars built the temple at the request of Thiru Ponnambala Swamigal, who handed over his Vinayagar Idol to the community before leaving for India. A new idol was later installed as the main deity but the old decaying idol still remains at the temple.
