Judaism is around 3,500 years old and is a monotheistic religion. The Jewish people believe that they are God's chosen people. There are 12 million Jews in the world, settled mostly in Israel (a Jewish state) and the United States of America. Jewish sects include Orthodox Judaism, Reform Judaism, Conservative Judaism, Hasidic Judaism and Kabbalah.
When Sir Stamford Raffles established Singapore as a trading post in 1819, Jews of Baghdadi origin, mainly from India, were the first to migrate. Today, with just two hundred local Jews left, the community offers members a good Jewish education, weekly discussions and Sabbath luncheons and dinners and other community activities.
