The first wave of Sikhs to land in Singapore came in the form of sepoys (policemen) in 1873 brought by the British to help keep the peace and put down the Chinese gang wars. The early Sikhs were employed as watchmen, policemen or dairy farmers.
It was only after the Second World War that they established themselves as traders or businessmen in the community in High Street, mainly dealing in textiles. Today there are about 15,000 Sikhs in Singapore. |
