Establishment of the Singapore Self Government

It was the year 1959, when Singapore was able to boast of its self-government. The Establishment of the Self Government of Singapore has a lot of facts and history associated with it.

If we try to find out about the Establishment of the Self Government of Singapore, we will find that it is David Marshal who took the first step. David Marshall was the first Chief Minister of Singapore.
Marshall headed a delegation that traveled to London and took active part in the Merdeka Talks and made their point of having a self-government of Singapore. Marshall did not succeed in his mission as the British at that point of time were concerned over the various issues such as labor unrest, communist influence that were hampering the steady growth of Singapore as far as economy is concerned.

Marshall did not lose hope and continued his mission and went to the point of threatening the British as he laid down the condition that he would give his resignation if the British did not allow Singapore to have its own self-government. This threat of Marshall also did not yield fruitful results, as the British were not willing to lose control over the land of Singapore. Marshall resigned and Lim Yew Hock succeeded him.
Lim Yew Hock got many trade union leaders as well as many pro community leaders arrested under the Internal Security Act. This act of the new Chief Minister compelled the British in the year 1957 to held a second round of talk This time Lim Yew Hock's dream turned into reality as the British granted the permission to Singapore to establish a government of its own.

It was decided that the State of Singapore would comprise of people born in Singapore or the Federation of Malaya, citizen of British who have resided on this land for more than two years, and other people who are settled in Singapore for atleast 10 years. The Legislative Assembly would be of fifty-one members and these fifty-one members would be selected by the process of election. The members of the Cabinet as well as the Prime Minister would govern or have control over all the matters of the government but will have nothing to do with matters related to defence and foreign affairs.
