Life of Sir Stamford Raffles
Sir Raffles was born on 6th July, 1781 on a ship named Anne, off the Jamaican coast. Captain Benjamin Raffles, his father, was a slave-trader in the Caribbean and he passed away when Stamford Raffles was only 14 years of age. Immediately Raffles joined as a clerk in the East India Company in London which was the main player behind Britain's
conquests of foreign lands.

Stamford Raffles was sent to Penang in Malaysia in the year 1805, and there he was appointed to a post under the Honorable Governor of Penang, Philip Dundas. This was the first stepping-stone of his long association with the South-East Asia. In 1805 after he was appointed as the Asst. Secretary to the Governor of Penang he got married to a widow called Olivia Mariamme Devenish. During this time he also came in contact with Thomas Otho Travers, who would be his friend for 20 long years.Sir Raffles died on the 5th July, 1826.

Sir Stamford Raffles' Statue
The Statue of Sir Stamford Raffles, who founded the Singapore city in 1819, is located at the North Boat Quay, the exact point where he first stepped after landing at this port-city.
The place is known by the locals as the Raffles' landing-site. Another statue of Sir Stamford Raffles which exactly resembles the one at the North Boat Quay is erected at the front portion of the Victoria Theatre.
