Sports in Singapore

Like any other part of the world sports has always remained an all time favorite of the people of Singapore. The glimpses of the sporty Singapore can be best felt in the sport complexes built during the colonial time. The colonial rulers keeping in mind the pastimes of the people built public facilities like Mt Emily Swimming Complex, Farrer Park Sports Complex, Yan Kit Swimming complex and some other places. A lot of other sports complexes were built with the settlement of the Asians in Singapore. The Chinese Swimming Club, the Indian Association and the Ceylon Sports Club are some of the names to be mentioned here in this context.

The Sports Division was created after Singapore gained independence to encourage sports activities among the people of the nation. The National Sports Promotion Board and the National Stadium Corporation was established in the year 1971. After a few years both the organizations were merged to establish Singapore Sports Council.

In 1971 the National Sports Promotion Board and the National Stadium Corporation were established. Later on, these two were merged to create the Singapore Sports Council (SSC). SSC realizes that a vibrant industry is needed to sustain a sporting culture and sports excellence. Therefore it is engaging in the following activities:
