The Strait Settlements is basically a collective name that adverts to the territories of the South East Asia that were conquered by the British East India Company. This article gives a detailed account on the Strait Settlements of Singapore.
In the year 1826 the administration of the territories located in South East Asia that came under the British possession were looked after collectively and they were referred to as the crown colony.

At the beginning or in the early years the Strait Settlements comprised of the island of Penang, which is also officially known as the Wales Land, the islands of Singapore as well as the islets that lies in close proximity to the islands, the town or the territory of Malacca, the island of Dingding and the Wellesly Province. These settlements were answerable for their act to the Colonial Office that was situated in London.

It was the Governor of the Strait Settlements of Singapore who along with the help and support of the Executive Council managed the affairs of the colony of the settlements to the best of their ability. The Executive Council comprised of the Legislative Council and the ex-officio members. A civil service looked into the administration aspect of the colony as well as the Federated Malay States. The Strait Settlements of Singapore was initially governed by India till the year 1867 as after that the British took direct control over this land. In the year 1950, Singapore evolved as an independent colony and for this reason the other territories or provinces or towns that constituted the Strait Settlements were allotted to Australia and the Federation of Malay, which is now known as Malaysia.
