History of the Kranji War Memorial
During the World War 2, tens of thousands of international soldiers from the commonwealth countries like Canada, Australia, Srilanka, India, Malay, U.K., New Zeal and The Netherlands, died while protecting Singapore and Malay from the occupying Japanese forces. The monument is built to honor the memories of all those fallen soldiers.

The memorial wall is engraved with the names of all those 24,000 soldiers killed in World War 2.
The Kranji War Memorial consists of the War graves, the State cemetery, the memorial walls and the military graves.
The names of over 25,000 allied soldiers killed in the war, are inscribed on both sides of the twelve columns of the Memorial Walls. Their bodies were never recovered. About 4,458 allied soldiers are laid to rest in the Kranji War Graves. The graves are marked with the names of the soldiers, and the lawns surrounding the graves are nicely manicured.

To the north of the Kranji War Cemetery lies the State Cemetery. It's the burial ground of Singapore's first 2 presidents, Inche Yusuf bin Ishak and Benjamin Henry Sheares.
The Military Grave is the final resting place of the commonwealth soldiers and it lies to the east of the Kranji War Cemetery.
The Memorial Ground seats on a hilly-terrain overlooking the mostly under-developed landscape.
During the time of the Japanese occupation it acted as a burial-ground for the hospital but later on it was turned into a military-cemetery. |
