Chinatown as the name means is an ethnic neighbourhood featuring distinctly Chinese cultural elements and a historically concentrated ethnic Chinese population. Chinatown is located within the larger district of Outram and 75% of its population is Chinese. Most of the town has been marked for conservation by the Urban Redevelopment Authority by declaring them as national heritage sites. The the original Thian Hock Keng Temple was first built by the Chinese when they set up base in 1821.
