Al-Abrar Mosque is one of the oldest mosques in Singapore located along Telok Ayer Street in Chinatown district. The mosque was built 1827 as a thatched hut structure. A brick structure was then constructed to replace the hut mosque in around 1850-1855 . It was declared as a national monument in 1974. The mosque is popular with three names- Masjid Al-Abrar, Kuchu Palli and Masjid Chulia. Al- Abrar is the official name, Kuchu Palli means “hut mosque” to reflect the structure of mosque and Masjid Chulia name is due to its location in Telok Ayer Street where Chulia immigrants from Soutn India were earliest to settle.
