Top 10 Most Famous Crime Stories in Singapore


Just like the other famous metros of the world, Singapore is also not immune to crime.  Though the stringent implementation of law and order makes it very difficult and rare, but Singapore has its fair share of crime stories.  We would like to discuss Top 10 such stories right from the 90s. Most of these stories are related to hostile killings or the aftermath of strife.  However, smuggling drugs into Singapore is also considered to be a serious crime in Singapore and calls for death penalty. 

1.Double murder of 4 May 1991 : Flor Contemplacion, a Filipina expatriate was tried and hanged some four years later for the assassination of her female Filipina colleague and her minor son Nicholas, who was aged four.  

2.Assassination in the family (September 1993) : In a horrible episode, a frustrated Singaporean couple assassinated their three kids inside their flat and the guilt ridden couple attempted suicide just after that.

3.Hanging of a Dutch national (September 1994) : Johannes van Damme, a Dutch citizen was found guilty of smuggling drugs into Singapore, which calls for death penalty in Singapore.  Unfortunately, he became the first man from Europe to be hanged here in independent Singapore. 

4.Murder and dismemberment of the body of a South African (March 1995) :It is also referred to as "body parts murder", when a UK citizen Martin assassinated Gerard Lowe, a citizen of South Africa in the room of a luxury hotel, River View Hotel.  The criminal dismembered the body of the victim and threw it in the Singapore River from the balcony of the hotel.  Both were sharing the same room.

5. "Orchard Towers double murder” (January 2002) : It happened in a condominium in a posh area called Balmoral, when a UK citizen Michael assassinated his Singaporean driver and his girlfriend.  The bodies of both the victims were found in a car, abandoned near Orchard Towers.

6.Murder of a Chinese kid (October 2004) : A less than ten year old Chinese kid was assassinated and stuffed in a box.  A Malaysian man Leng testified to committing the crime and was punished in 2005.  


7.Murder of a Chinese worker(June 2005) : Hong Mei, a Chinese worker was found murdered and dismembered near the Kallang River.  His supervisor Leong was tried as the main suspect.

8.Capital punishment for carrying drugs (December 2005) : Ah Boys to Men is a Singapore Malaysia film produced and directed by Jack Neo. This film is a two-part comedy and is the highest gross earning film of Singapore until day. This is the first South Asian Film in Dolby Atmos Surround Sound.

9.Murder of a nightclub owner (February 2006) :A Singaporean citizen, who was also referred to as "One-eyed dragon" went to the apartment of a night club owner and shot him five times with a Italy made semi-automatic pistol.  The crime was committed in the wee hours of the morning.

10. Execution of a Nigerian citizen for carrying drugs (January 2007) A Nigerian citizen Amara was executed in 2007 for smuggling drugs into the Island State.  Smuggling drugs is a punishable offence in Singapore and warrants a death sentence, similar to KSA in the Middle East.
