Riverside, Singapore

The Riverside in Singapore forms the nucleus of this place as it is lined with entertainment activities, official buildings and panoramic view points. Singapore River, located in the Central area, is 3.2 kms long and has a rich historical past. Stamford Raffles, founder of Singapore, is believed to enter this place through the north bank of the Singapore River. The mouth of the River served as a port since ancient times. The strategic location of Singapore made it one of the most important centers for trading activities. The river mouth also witnessed the beginning of a fishing village which was initially called Temasek and was later renamed as Singapura. The Riverside till date has been the hub of financial, commercial and recreational activities.

Riverside Monuments

The Riverside is lined with Boat quay, Clarke quay and Robertson quay that housed major warehouses, go-downs and offices in the past. The complete stretch even today forms the major commercial area and is packed with ancient monuments and modern buildings. The Merilion situated at the south bank of the river mouth, is the symbol of Singapore. Designed by the Tourism board in 1964, this 8.6 meter high Merilion is shaped as a combination of lion and fish with water spouting from it. The Cavenagh Bridge on the Singapore River is one of the oldest bridges and is the only suspension bridge of Singapore. This ancient structure was built in 1869 and is used as a walkway. The statue of Stamford Raffles or fondly called the Raffles statue is yet another example of fine workmanship and symbolizes Raffles’ entry into Singapore.

Riverside Museums and Buildings
Various museums are lined all along the river banks. The Asian Civilizations Museum is a modern monument but represents the past history of Singapore and nearby Asian countries accurately. A visit to this museum provides a glimpse of ancient culture of Singapore. The Mint Museum of Toys is another spectacular place that houses a massive 50,000 toy collection. A guided tour to this five-story museum will surely leave you flabbergasted. The 3-story Peranakan Museum describes the social, cultural and economic background of the Malay-Indian and Malay-Chinese traders also called the Peranakans. The museum building designed as a wedding cake represents the effervescent lifestyle of the Peranakans. The 1-Altitude Viewing Gallery situated at the top of the OUB center provides a spectacular bird’s eye view of the entire Riverside area. The Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall was built during the colonial era and served as an important center for arts.

The Riverside is famous for its vibrant nightouts. All major shopping malls are lined along the Singapore River.
